Bread and Butter Pickles

ingredients

  • 5 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp celery seed
  • 2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 4 quarts cucumbers
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 3 cups water
  • 6 onions, thinly sliced

instructions

  1. Slice cucumbers 1/8 thick and onions thinly
  2. Sprinkle salt over vegetables
  3. Cover with water (I use a large crock)
  4. Cover with ice, cover and let stand overnight. Drain
  5. Mix sugar, turmeric, celery seed, mustard seeds and water in large pan
  6. Bring mixture to boil
  7. Pour over pickles and bring to boil
  8. Sterilize jars and fill
  9. Seal with a hot water bath boil for 2-3 minutes
  10. Enjoy!
